What a year it’s been! There have been ups and downs, but 2016 has given us some amazing role models and inspiration from the world of sport, fitness, music and politics.
We wanted to showcase some of the women who have really shone this year and to say a big Boudavida ‘thank you’ for being awesome. We can’t wait to see what 2017 will bring for them!
Team GB Women’s Hockey Team
We praise and love every member of Team GB’s Women’s Hockey Team; what a fantastic summer they have had. We all remember that dramatic penalty shoot-out; the anticipation, the nerves, the sheer adrenaline! Watching the ladies team get their first gold at an Olympics - that will be a memory that will be cherished forever!
Broadcaster, journalist and author, Clare Balding has had another great year. She’s continued to make her stamp as a fantastic, knowledgeable sports broadcaster, and it was only natural that she was chosen as the lead presenter for the 2016 Rio Games – and what a job she did! As if that wasn’t enough, she also published her third book this year, ‘The Racehorse Who Wouldn’t Gallop’, which is her first children’s book. We can’t wait to see her on our screens for all the big sporting events next year!
Deliciously Ella has accomplished so much this year! Not only has she published two more books (Deliciously Ella Every Day and Deliciously Ella Smoothies and Juices – which make great Christmas presents), she has also opened two Deli shops in London. To add to those achievements, she has also launched her own brand of Energy Balls that now retail in Waitrose stores across the country. 2017 will see her kick off her book tour, but who knows what else she has up her sleeve for next year…
We read a great article recently in Shortlist about Michelle Obama: The People’s President. Read it, trust us – what a lady! This year, we say goodbye to her as FLOTUS, but we wanted to commend her on all the fantastic things she’s done in her eight years of being in the White House. From targeting childhood obesity with her Let’s Move! Initiative, to becoming a Guinness World Record Holder (it’s true, google it), and her empowering work for women – we hope she carries on all her great work upon leaving The White House… and who knows, maybe she’ll be back?!
Jess has had a glowing career in athletics, huge success at London 2012 and then triumphed in her comeback in 2015, an amazing feat of dedication and training whilst juggling being a #1 mum to her son Reggie. She may not have retained her Olympic title but it was inspiring to see her take Silver. Her dedication and down-to-earth attitude has drawn fans from all ages, flocking to the screen to watch her compete. We’ll be sad to see her leave the sporting world but we’re excited for her future!
She’ll reduce you to tears with her heartfelt songs, and will have you crying with laughter in interviews. We were so excited to have Adele back through 2016. She headlined at Glastonbury, and picked up a handful of awards at the Brits2016; British Female Solo Artist, British Album of the Year, British Single of the Year and British Global Success. With rumours that she will be taking time out after the tour, we’ll miss her and hope she comes back to the music industry quickly!
2016 has been a big year for our beloved Queen. Not only did she celebrate her 90th birthday but she also became the longest reigning monarch and head of state in October! She is always wearing a smile, has a fantastic humour, is dressed to impress and the debate is still gripping the nation…. what does the Queen carry in her handbag? Let her have her secrets we say! Long live the Queen!
Shirin made history this year when she became the first female IRONMAN athlete to represent Iran in October when she took on Kona. With her journey, Shirin aims to change the way women of Islamic faith approach – and are permitted to approach sport, especially triathlon. She has even developed her own range of sportswear which she hopes will inspire other women to take part, what a woman!
A self-declared feminist, this year saw Emma take a break from acting and focus on her women’s right work. She started a feminist book club: Our Shared Shelf, which had a goal to share feminist ideas and encourage discussion. Spreading her love and passion for reading and feminism, we loved that she took part in the ‘Books on the Underground’ initiative where she distributed free copies of Maya Angelou’s memoir Mom & Me & Mom on the tube. With her latest film, Beauty and the Beast, coming out next year we’re looking forward to seeing her on the big screen again - we’ve missed you Emma!
